Every hot spring in La Fortuna is heated by the same thing: the hydrothermal system beneath Arenal. The water rises from the same volcanic source, so its mineral content and warmth are broadly similar wherever you soak. That means the endless online debates about which spring has 'better' water are largely beside the point. What genuinely differs is the atmosphere, the scale, the crowd and the price — so choose on those, and ignore anyone claiming one spring's water is more volcanic than another's.
Tabacón — the luxury river
Tabacón is the premium choice: a naturally flowing thermal river winding through landscaped jungle gardens, with warm cascades and quiet corners, at a premium day-pass price. It shares its name, poignantly, with one of the three villages the 1968 eruption buried. If you want the most beautiful, serene, special-occasion soak — the kind of place you'd choose for an anniversary — Tabacón is it, and worth the money for the setting alone.
Baldi — big and lively
Baldi is the largest complex by pool count, with around twenty-five pools at varying temperatures, a swim-up bar and waterslides, and a big, sociable, family-friendly atmosphere. If you're travelling with children, or you want somewhere lively with plenty to do rather than a quiet soak, Baldi delivers — it's the party end of the spectrum, and priced more accessibly than Tabacón.
EcoTermales — quiet and capped
EcoTermales is the antidote to Baldi: a small, adults-oriented spring that deliberately caps entry at around a hundred guests across four natural pools of different temperatures, with no slides and no loud music. It's reservation-only and books out, precisely because it's the calm, grown-up, uncrowded option. If your ideal is a peaceful evening soak with your partner and the sound of the forest, this is the one to reserve ahead.
How to pick
It comes down to the evening you want. Tabacón for a serene, luxurious, special soak; Baldi for a big, fun, family-friendly complex; EcoTermales for a quiet, capped, adults-only calm. If your tour includes a specific spring, that's often the simplest choice — but if you can pick, match it to the mood, not to any claim about the water, because the water is the same volcano either way.
